A healthy horse is very importantChecklist for a Healthy Horse

Peak performance and optimum health for your horse don't "just happen"! Your horse depends on you to provide the conditions needed for overall fitness and well-being. Keep him in top condition by paying attention to the following:
  • good nutrition
    • adequate intake for age/breed/use of horse
    • good quality feed

  • preventive health care
    • vaccination against infectious equine diseases
      • encephalitis, including Eastern, Western, Venezuelan, West Nile
      • tetanus
      • rhinopneumonitis
      • influenza
      • strangles
      • rabies
    • some vaccines may be needed more than once per year, depending on:
      • environment
      • travel with horse

  • parasite control
    • internal - regular de-worming
    • external
      • flies
      • lice
      • ticks
      • mosquitoes

  • A horses mouth should be inspected regularly dental health
    • maintenance exam and treatment by qualified vet experienced in equine dentistry every 6-12 months
    • check mouth weekly for sores
    • palpate cheeks for sharp points
    • check for symptoms of dental problems

  • hoof care
    • trimming
    • shoeing
