No special preparation is necessary prior to dental procedures. Dental treatment may be performed at the clinic. We also have a portable dental chute that can be transported to your barn to safely perform dental procedures on your horse. Dr. Kimberlin provides the instruments needed for dental examination and treatment. He will sedate your horse prior to insertion of the speculum that holds the horse's mouth open during the procedures. You may watch the treatment. (Caution: be sure to give Dr. Kimberlin plenty of room to work!) Most treatment takes from 30 minutes to 1½ hours, depending on the amount of work needed. Follow-up care will be recommended after the examination and treatment. Follow-up varies depending on the type and amount of dental problems found. Most horses need dental work yearly, but in some cases twice yearly treatment may be needed. Contact the clinic if your horse exhibits symptoms of dental distress, even if it isn't time for a scheduled checkup.
